Museo Atlántico: visiting Lanzarote's underwater sculpture museum

Museo Atlántico is an underwater installation by artist Jason deCaires Taylor off Lanzarote's south coast. Groups of human figures sit on the seabed as an artwork and an evolving marine habitat. It is not visible from a conventional gallery and access requires an authorised diving excursion.

The work and its setting

The sculptures address migration, consumption and the relationship between people and nature. Marine growth changes their surfaces over time. That transformation is part of the work, not damage to be cleaned away by visitors.

Images flatten the scale and visibility of an underwater visit. Colour is reduced at depth, suspended particles alter the view and the group moves through a three-dimensional site. A diver should expect a guided marine experience rather than a sequence of perfectly lit sculptures.

Access is a dive, not a casual swim

Depth, sea state and operator rules determine who can visit. Confirm required certification, medical questionnaire, equipment, insurance and refresher needs directly with an authorised centre. A promotional photograph cannot assess a diver's fitness or recent experience.

• Do not touch, stand on or collect from the sculptures.
• Maintain buoyancy and follow the guide's route.
• Postpone if ill, congested, unfit to dive or uncomfortable with conditions.
• Allow the operator to cancel when weather or visibility is unsuitable.

A non-diving alternative

People who cannot or do not wish to dive should not be pressured into certification for one attraction. Lanzarote's land-based art and nature centres provide a stronger introduction to the island's relationship between art, geology and tourism.
