Cycling around La Pedrera reservoir: choose the route before the view
La Pedrera is a striking blue reservoir in the dry interior of the Vega Baja, west of Torremendo. It is water infrastructure, not a recreational lake with a continuous public shore path. A safe ride begins by distinguishing public roads and authorised tracks from service roads, private land and the reservoir perimeter.
Understand the landscape
The reservoir stores water within the Tajo-Segura transfer and distribution system. Its engineered banks and operational areas may have restrictions. Views open from surrounding roads and higher ground without requiring access to the water's edge.
Choose road or mountain bike deliberately
The CV-950 carries motor traffic and has exposed sections. Off-road alternatives vary from firm agricultural tracks to loose, rutted surfaces. A line on an old activity page is not proof of legal access or current condition. Use an up-to-date map, respect gates and turn back at a restriction.
Carry navigation which survives a weak signal
Download the legal route and surrounding roads before leaving, but do not follow a screen blindly through a gate or across cultivated land. Note two safe exit points and the settlements which can provide water or transport. A paper overview is useful when heat drains a phone battery faster than expected.
Heat changes the risk
- Avoid the hottest hours and postpone the ride during official heat or fire warnings.
- Carry more water than an urban ride, sun protection, tools and a charged phone.
- Tell somebody the route and expected return time.
- Use lights, visible clothing and a correctly fitted helmet.
- Do not swim or descend operational banks.
Spanish traffic rules apply on public roads, including positioning, lighting and group behaviour. Check current DGT guidance before the ride. Mobile coverage and shade cannot be assumed.
