Growing an avocado from a stone: a plant project, not a fruit promise

An avocado stone can produce an attractive house or patio plant, but it is not a reliable shortcut to a named fruit tree. Seedlings are genetically variable and may take years to flower. Commercial avocado cultivars are normally propagated by grafting so the fruiting variety and rootstock are known.

Start with a clean, undamaged stone

Wash off the flesh without removing the brown seed coat. The broader end is the base and the slightly pointed end faces up. The simplest method is to set the lower half in moist, free-draining compost while leaving the top exposed.

For water rooting, support the stone above a glass so only the rounded base remains in water. Keep it warm in bright indirect light and refresh the water regularly. The stone usually splits before a root emerges downwards and a shoot grows upwards. Patience is more useful than adding fertiliser to the glass.

Move to compost at the right stage

Once a water-grown seedling has several leaves and fibrous roots, move it carefully to a pot with drainage. Keep the upper part of the stone above the compost and water in. Sudden hot sun can scorch soft indoor growth, so acclimatise the plant over several weeks.

Understand the Spanish climate

Avocados need warmth but can suffer in intense reflected patio heat, cold wind and frost. Containers overheat and dry faster than open soil. Give a young plant morning sun or bright shelter, then increase exposure as it establishes. Water deeply and let surplus drain. Constantly wet compost causes root damage.

If fruit is the objective

Buy a healthy grafted tree of a cultivar and rootstock recommended for the locality. Check mature size, pollination pattern, water quality and winter minimums. In drought-affected areas, the continuing irrigation demand should be part of the decision before planting.
